Third-placed qualifiers: the fix that solves one problem and creates another
Letting the best third-placed teams into a bracket keeps more groups alive to the final matchday, at the price of a comparison between teams who never faced the same opponents.

Why the mechanism exists at all
When a tournament has a number of groups that does not divide cleanly into a bracket, organisers must find additional qualifiers from somewhere to fill the empty places. Taking the best third-placed entrants is the least disruptive solution, because it uses matches that have already been played rather than adding a further round to the calendar. The alternative arrangements all cost something, whether that is extra fixtures, uneven group sizes or a bracket containing byes for a favoured set of entrants.
Against those options, promoting a handful of third-placed teams looks efficient, and it has been adopted across several sports facing the same underlying arithmetic. The efficiency is real, though the mechanism introduces a comparison problem that the tournament then has to manage for the rest of the phase.
Keeping the final matchday alive
The strongest argument for the mechanism is that it prevents entrants being eliminated before their group has finished, which protects the competitive value of the last round. A side sitting third with one fixture remaining still has something concrete to play for, and its opponent cannot treat the match as a formality. That produces more contested late fixtures across the phase, which matters commercially and also reduces the number of matches where teams openly rest their leading players.
The effect is strongest in tournaments with several groups, since a larger pool of third-placed entrants means more of them remain plausibly in contention. Organisers value this quality highly, because the final matchday is where a group phase either justifies itself or visibly collapses.
The comparison problem
Third-placed entrants are ranked against each other despite having played entirely different opponents in groups of differing strength, which makes the comparison inherently approximate. A team that finished third in a demanding group may have performed better than one that finished third against weaker opposition, yet the points column cannot see the difference. Tiebreakers based on goals scored or conceded partially address this, though they introduce their own distortion by rewarding teams that happened to face the weakest defences.
Some competitions attempt to correct for group strength directly, but any such correction requires a judgement about relative quality that organisers are reluctant to make explicit. The practical consequence is that qualification can hinge on results in a group the affected team never played in, which supporters find difficult to accept.
Bracket placement becomes unpredictable
Because the identity of the qualifying third-placed teams is unknown until the phase ends, the bracket cannot be fully determined in advance of the final fixtures. Organisers therefore publish allocation tables that assign each combination of qualifying groups to a specific set of bracket positions, and those tables are notoriously hard to read. They mean a team can change its likely opponent by scoring a late goal in a match whose outcome no longer affects its own qualification at all.
The situation creates genuinely strange incentives in the closing minutes of group fixtures, where a side may prefer one scoreline over another for reasons unrelated to advancing. Simultaneous kick-offs limit the worst of this, but the allocation table remains an unavoidable consequence of admitting qualifiers from a ranking rather than from a position.
Weighing the mechanism honestly
The device buys a livelier final matchday and a bracket that fills without extra fixtures, and both benefits are substantial in a calendar with no spare weeks. It costs a clean qualification principle, since advancing after finishing third depends partly on events elsewhere and partly on a comparison that cannot be made precisely. Competitions that use it tend to be those where participation is broad and the field size does not match a power of two, which is an increasingly common situation.
Competitions that reject it usually do so because they value the simplicity of a rule that every supporter can apply without consulting a chart. Both positions are coherent, and the choice tells you whether a tournament prioritises legibility or the density of meaningful fixtures.
