Why Roof Closures Change The Whole Schedule
Closing a stadium roof rescues one match while reshaping the rest of the day, because the covered courts become the only playable venues and every other court's queue stops.

A retractable roof is presented as insurance against rain. Operationally it creates a different problem, because a site with two covered courts and fifteen open ones splits in half when the weather turns.
Closing is a scheduled operation, not a switch
The roof takes minutes to close and the air handling system needs considerably longer to bring humidity and surface conditions back to a playable state before the match restarts.
Referees therefore call the closure early on a forecast rather than at the first drop, because a late decision costs the closing time and the conditioning time in sequence.
Once closed, the roof usually stays closed for the rest of the session. Reopening mid-match would change conditions again, and consistency within a match takes priority over daylight.
Uncovered courts stop and their matches queue
Rain suspends every open court simultaneously, and those matches join a backlog that can only be cleared on subsequent days or by moving matches onto the covered courts.
The backlog compounds because each day already has a full order of play. A lost afternoon does not have an empty slot waiting for it later in the week.
Organisers respond by extending playing hours, adding courts to the daily schedule and, in the worst cases, scheduling matches on days traditionally kept free.
Covered courts become a rationed resource
With only a couple of courts playable, the scheduling team must decide which matches get them, balancing broadcast value, tournament progression and the fairness of moving a match indoors.
Indoor conditions play differently. Grass is slower and the ball travels differently without wind, so a player who prepared for outdoor conditions faces a changed match.
That is why moving a match under the roof is treated as a scheduling decision with competitive consequences rather than a neutral weather response.
Curfews and lighting bound the recovery
Many venues operate under a planning curfew agreed with neighbours, which sets a hard end time regardless of whether a match is finished or a roof is closed.
The curfew means the roof cannot simply be used to play indefinitely into the night, so the daily catch-up capacity is limited by planning law rather than technology.
Ground staff also need hours after play for court repair and preparation, and that window is protected because losing it damages the surfaces for the remaining days.
Spectators are the harder half of the problem
Ground pass holders whose courts are rained off cannot be admitted to the covered show courts, so the site holds a large crowd with nothing to watch and limited shelter.
Venues therefore plan indoor circulation, catering capacity and refund rules for rain days as carefully as they plan the order of play itself.
The roof solves the broadcast problem completely and the spectator problem only partially, which is the trade-off every covered outdoor venue lives with.
