Why a lost day does not simply shift everything

A bracket has a fixed end date agreed with broadcasters, venues and the wider calendar, so time lost early cannot be recovered by extending the tournament at the far end. The matches displaced by an interruption must therefore be absorbed within the remaining days, which means some days carry more matches than they were designed to hold. Because later rounds cannot begin until earlier ones finish, a delay in the first week propagates forward and squeezes the space available before the closing matches.

The compression lands hardest on competitors who keep winning, since they are the ones with matches remaining in every subsequent round. A player eliminated early is unaffected by the disruption, while a player reaching the final may lose most of their scheduled recovery.

Covered courts split the field in two

When only a small number of courts are enclosed, play continues on those while everything else stops, which produces very different experiences within the same round. Competitors scheduled on covered courts complete their matches on time and receive their full rest, while others wait and then play under a compressed schedule. Court allocation is normally decided on the expected interest of a match, so higher-profile competitors are more likely to be protected from the weather.

That is a defensible commercial decision and also an unintended competitive advantage, and organisers have limited ability to separate the two. The effect is small in a dry fortnight and substantial in a wet one, which makes it an unpredictable rather than a systematic bias.

What gets removed first

Faced with a backlog, schedulers protect the completion of the bracket above everything else, because an unfinished tournament has no product to deliver at all. The first casualty is therefore rest, with matches moved onto consecutive days for competitors who had expected a gap between rounds. The second casualty is the warm-up and practice access that competitors use to prepare, since court time is consumed by matches that must be played.

Both losses fall on physical readiness rather than on anything visible, so the effect appears later as fatigue in a closing set rather than as an obvious grievance. This is why players who navigate a disrupted tournament successfully are often those with the deepest physical base rather than the sharpest technique.

Scheduling choices under pressure

Organisers facing a backlog can extend playing hours, move matches to smaller courts, or ask competitors to play twice within a short period. Extending hours runs into curfews, lighting limits and transport arrangements, none of which can be adjusted quickly on the day of a disruption. Moving matches to smaller courts resolves the arithmetic but changes conditions, since a court with different surroundings plays differently and offers fewer spectators.

Asking a competitor to play twice is the fastest solution and the least fair, because it doubles the physical load of a single day at a critical stage. Every option is unattractive, and the schedule that emerges from a wet week is a record of which unattractive option was judged least damaging.

Why full enclosure is not the obvious answer

Covering every court would remove the problem entirely, and the reason it has not happened is a combination of cost, structure and the character of the surface itself. Roofs require the surrounding structure to carry substantial loads, which is straightforward at a main show court and prohibitive across an entire site of outside courts. On a natural surface, enclosure also changes the growing conditions, since grass requires light and airflow that a permanent covering interferes with.

Retractable designs address the growing problem but multiply the engineering cost, which only makes sense for courts hosting a large share of televised matches. The result is a permanent compromise in which the biggest matches are protected and the rest of the draw remains at the mercy of the weather.
