Rain is the defining operational risk in tournament cricket. It shapes which venues are chosen, how the schedule is spaced, and how much equipment sits unused at every ground.

Drainage speed is a selection criterion

Modern tournament venues are built with sand-based profiles and subsurface drainage that move standing water away in a fraction of the time an older clay outfield takes.

The measure that matters is time from rain stopping to play resuming, and organisers compare grounds on that figure rather than on annual rainfall.

A ground with poor drainage can be excellent in every other respect and still be excluded, because one wet afternoon there costs a fixture the tournament cannot replay.

Covering equipment is a fixed asset with a crew

Full outfield covers, hover covers for the square and the machinery to deploy them need a trained ground crew of substantial size on standby throughout every match day.

Deployment speed depends on people, not just equipment, so tournaments require minimum crew numbers per venue and rehearse the deployment before the event begins.

Super soppers and blotting equipment finish the job after covers come off, and venues are assessed on how many machines they hold rather than whether they hold any.

Reserve days are allocated selectively

Group matches rarely carry reserve days because the schedule has no room, so results are decided by revised targets rather than by replay when time runs out.

Knockout matches usually do carry them, which requires holding venue, staff, officials, broadcast crew and hotel capacity for an additional day at every knockout fixture.

Since most reserve days go unused, the cost is pure insurance, and the argument each cycle is about how many knockouts genuinely need one.

Schedules are spaced to create informal slack

Beyond formal reserve days, planners leave gaps between fixtures at a venue so a delayed finish does not collide with the next match's preparation and pitch work.

Those gaps also give ground staff time to repair a saturated outfield, which after heavy rain can take longer than drying the surface water itself.

Compressed schedules erode this slack, which is why expanded tournaments with more teams tend to be more vulnerable to weather rather than less.

Climate windows are chosen before venues are

Tournament dates are set to sit inside the host region's dry season, and venue selection then happens within that window rather than the other way round.

Where broadcast commitments force a tournament into a marginal period, organisers concentrate fixtures at the best-drained grounds and treat the rest as secondary venues.

The pattern is visible in any tournament schedule: the grounds with the heaviest fixture loads are usually the ones that dry fastest, not the ones with the largest crowds.
