How Pitch Preparation Runs To A Fixed Countdown
A curator prepares a strip on a schedule measured in days, with rolling, watering and cutting sequenced so the surface peaks on the first morning rather than before or after it.

A cricket pitch is a manufactured surface with a preparation timetable. The curator works backwards from the first morning, and each stage has to happen in order and on time.
The countdown begins well before the match
Preparation typically starts a fortnight or more out, with the selected strip mown, watered heavily and then allowed to dry down under a controlled regime.
Rolling begins once moisture has penetrated, because rolling a dry surface compacts only the top layer and produces a pitch that breaks up early.
Each rolling session is timed against the drying curve, so weather during the preparation period changes the schedule more than weather on match days does.
Moisture content is the variable being managed
The curator is aiming for a specific moisture profile through the depth of the strip on the first morning, since that determines pace, bounce and how the surface wears.
Too much moisture produces early seam movement and a surface that deteriorates quickly once it dries under the sun during the match.
Too little produces a strip that crumbles from the start, which shortens matches and attracts criticism from both boards and the match officials.
Grass cover is a deliberate setting
The amount of live grass left on the strip is decided in the final days, and it governs how much the surface binds together and how much assistance bowlers get.
Curators receive guidance from the home board about the character of surface wanted, though match officials assess the result independently against playability standards.
Cutting height is adjusted progressively rather than in one pass, because a heavy final cut removes the root binding that holds the surface through a long match.
Covers and weather force improvisation
Rain during preparation interrupts the drying schedule, and a strip that has taken unplanned water cannot simply be rolled back to where it was.
Covers are therefore deployed during preparation as well as during play, and grounds with limited covering equipment lose control of the process in wet weather.
Where preparation is disrupted badly, curators switch to an adjacent strip that has been prepared in parallel, which is why squares hold several strips at once.
Multiple strips are prepared simultaneously
A square in regular use has strips at different stages of the cycle, some recovering from recent matches, some mid-preparation and some resting under repair.
Rotation gives the ground resilience against weather, back-to-back fixtures and late format changes, and it is the reason a busy venue can host so many matches.
The limiting factor is the number of usable strips and the crew available to work them, which is what actually sets how many fixtures a ground can be allocated.
