A tennis court installed for one tournament is a manufactured product with a specification. The people laying it are controlling ball speed and bounce as deliberately as a curator prepares a pitch.

Layers, not a single coating

A cushioned acrylic court is built from a base layer, resilient rubber layers, textured colour coats and line paint, each applied and cured before the next goes down.

The number and thickness of the coats determine how much energy the surface absorbs, which is what players experience as pace and shoulder-height bounce.

Applying them requires stable temperature and low humidity, so indoor installations are easier to control than outdoor ones exposed to weather during the build.

Pace is specified before it is measured

Organisers choose a target pace rating and instruct the contractor accordingly, adjusting the sand content in the top coats to make the surface faster or slower.

The finished court is then tested and rated, and events publish or at least declare the rating so that players know what they are preparing for.

Small changes to the mix produce noticeable differences in play, which is why the same tournament can feel materially different from one year to the next.

Clay courts are a different construction entirely

A temporary clay court is built from crushed material laid over a drainage bed, and it must be watered and rolled into condition rather than cured chemically.

Maintaining it during an event needs a crew brushing, watering and topping up the surface between matches, which is a continuous operation rather than an installation.

The material is heavy, so temporary clay is used mainly where a permanent base already exists, and the tonnage involved makes full temporary installation rare.

Sub-base condition governs the outcome

An acrylic system inherits every fault in the floor below it, so levels are surveyed and corrected before any resilient layer is applied.

Puddling on outdoor courts after rain is almost always a levels problem, and it is why organisers insist on tolerance testing at handover.

Where the base is an arena slab, movement joints and floor loading limits also have to be accommodated in the build-up.

Removal is designed into the system

Temporary installations are laid on a separating layer so the surface can be lifted without damaging the venue floor, which is a condition of the hire agreement.

Some systems use modular tiles or rolled sheet products that are reusable, trading a slightly different playing feel for a much faster build and derig.

The choice between a poured system and a modular one is essentially a choice between playing quality and schedule, and it is made venue by venue.
