Arenas hosting both hockey and basketball do not remove the ice between events. They build over it, and the conversion is a rehearsed operation with a fixed running order.

The ice stays and gets covered

Removing and remaking an ice sheet takes far longer than a turnaround allows, so the sheet is left in place and insulated decking is laid across it.

The decking blocks heat transfer in both directions, keeping the ice stable underneath while preventing condensation on the surface above.

Boards and glass are removed or lowered, and the player benches and penalty areas are reconfigured for the incoming sport.

The court is assembled, not rolled out

Basketball floors are built from interlocking hardwood panels stored on carts, laid in sequence and locked together, with edge trim and markings aligning across the joints.

Flatness matters because an uneven joint changes ball bounce and creates an injury risk, so the crew checks levels as the panels go down.

Baskets are wheeled in and anchored, and their positions are surveyed against the court markings rather than assumed from the panel layout.

Seating and dasher-level access change together

Hockey seating sits further back than basketball seating, so retractable and portable sections are moved forward to fill the space the boards occupied.

Courtside seating is installed on the decking, which requires the deck to carry both the seating load and the circulation around it.

Access routes for teams, officials and medical staff are reconfigured at the same time, since the two sports use different tunnels and bench positions.

Everything else in the building changes too

Scoreboards, ribbon boards, shot clocks, sound configuration and lighting presets are switched, and each sport has its own broadcast camera positions and cable runs.

Locker rooms are reassigned and re-signed, and equipment for the outgoing sport is stored rather than removed from the building.

Advertising and dasher branding change with the tenant, so the visible surfaces are swapped as part of the same sequence.

The crew and the clock are the real constraint

Conversions are performed by a large crew working to a documented sequence, and the elapsed time is what determines whether two events can share a day.

Buildings advertise their conversion time to promoters, because a faster turnaround means more bookable dates and therefore more revenue.

League schedulers use the same figure, which is how arena engineering ends up shaping the fixture list of two professional sports at once.
