A professional basketball schedule is produced by solving a constraint problem. The largest constraint is not competitive balance but the availability of the buildings the teams play in.

Most arenas have other tenants

Arenas commonly host a hockey team, a college programme and a heavy concert calendar, and those bookings are made independently of the basketball season.

Buildings submit blocked dates to the league before scheduling begins, and those blocks are treated as fixed because the alternative is losing booked revenue.

Teams sharing a building with another franchise face the tightest constraints, since two full home schedules must fit around the same external bookings.

Travel is minimised within the blocked dates

Once availability is known, the scheduler builds road trips that group nearby opponents, reducing flight time and the number of separate departures across the season.

Back-to-back games in different cities are limited by agreement, and long sequences of consecutive road games are capped, which further narrows the solution space.

These constraints interact, so relieving one usually tightens another, and the published schedule is a compromise rather than an optimum on any single measure.

Broadcast windows are allocated before dates

National broadcast slots are assigned to particular evenings, and attractive fixtures are placed into them, which fixes certain matchups to certain dates early in the process.

Those fixed points then propagate, since both teams' surrounding games must be arranged around a date neither of them chose.

Holiday and showcase dates are similarly fixed, and they carry venue implications because arenas often have competing commitments on exactly those days.

Conversions consume hours between events

An arena hosting hockey and basketball must convert between surfaces, laying insulated decking and court panels over the ice or removing them afterwards.

Conversion takes a crew several hours, which means same-day double events are possible but leave no margin, and the league avoids scheduling into them.

Concert loads are worse, since rigging and derig can occupy a full day at each end, and arenas will not accept a basketball date squeezed between them.

Contingency capacity is deliberately preserved

Schedulers leave open dates late in the season so postponed games can be replayed without extending the calendar or creating additional back-to-backs.

Postponements arise from weather, arena incidents and health protocols, and without reserved dates a single postponement forces a cascade of moves.

Those open dates look like inefficiency in a published schedule, and they are the reason a disrupted season can still finish on time.
